Booze Free Musings: One year on and 8 reasons to keep at it.

It’s been a year since I gave up le booze. Here’s a summary:

Nights out are super cheap. Like £10 and under cheap. There is however only so much fizzy stuff you can drink before you bloat up like a puffer fish, but then again you don’t have the thirst you get when you’re chugging back the ale. You don’t get into taxis you can’t afford in misjudged error and then spend the rest of the week eating beans on toast until payday either. Plus I’m totally a cheap date these days, good news for my better half.

I am much fitter (boom!). This isn’t necessarily because I stopped drinking alcohol and “the weight just dropped off/my skin was so much clearer” as you regularly hear people say. It’s to do with the fact I can be arsed to exercise and don’t skip days because I’m hungover/wrapped in the invisible but very heavy blanket of shame and I don’t want to stuff my face with dirt burgers on my way home.

People will judge you. Not everyone but some people will. They take it as a reflection on them that you aren’t drinking. I decided it was bad for me, and my sanity and on occasion my safety. I don’t give a hoot if people imbibe. If you can drink sensibly and walk away, good for you. Unfortunately I don’t have that built into my brain. Think twice before you call someone “boring” for not drinking or say “you’re not fun anymore”. Even if it is meant as a bit of a ribbing, it can be really hurtful and if you’re a true friend you’ll support them in their decision.

No regrets. I haven’t forgotten anything (including my address – yup that happened) for a year now. No deep and meaningfuls which I’ve instantly forgotten about then had to pretend that I remembered. I haven’t said anything stupid, or that I don’t mean – whether for good or bad.

Fuck you anxiety. And the horse you rode in on. Every morning after a night out now is like floating on a cloud. I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing it is not to live with the impending sense of doom that goes beyond regular beer fear and leads to a week’s worth of panic and anxiety. Anxiety ridden people shouldn’t drink. I didn’t even know about the links between alcohol and anxiety until I gave it up. Not having this regular burst of anxiety splitting up my weeks/months means that I don’t have to live with it any more than I need to. Having it constantly hanging around like a bad friend, there to remind you how shit you are, really isn’t good for your mental health. I have felt free for a whole continuous year and it feels excellent.

I find your photos of booze ridiculous. If it a fancy cocktail that looks like it’s been squeezed out of a Disney villain’s butt with half a forest in it – HURRAH – I am sure I will enjoy looking at it. If it’s a glass of wine on a table – BIG WOW – it could be Casini for all I know.  It becomes very weird when you don’t drink to see these often posted pics – maybe it’s because I was a culprit myself. A pint of cider with the sun gleaming off it? gorgeous – I’d think. Now I just think I let it define me for too long.  Just don’t snap chat it to me. Why would you do this when you know I don’t drink and you know how much I’ve struggled with it? WHY (jokes – expect a photo of a pint of squash back every day until it bores you to death).

I don’t look like a nob in photos. No more tongue lolling out of my gob. No more thumbs up (my drunken go to) just me with a smile on my face and not dead behind the eyes. or passed out. Below: me at 10pm after works christmas do 2013 (passed out) and after the 2014 one (posing in my home made dress for my sewing blog)

A year of firsts. First holiday, wedding, hen do, birthday, anniversary, new job all celebrated without a drop. It actually seems insane that the culture around celebrating milestones and success is defined as getting off your tits on booze as much as humanely possible. I’m not trashed?! I’m a failure at celebrating my success. Bollocks to that.

So there you have it. That’s what it’s been like. Do I miss it? No. Am I happier? Yes, a million times yes. Third best decision ever made in my life. (1 = marrying Tim, 2 = the awesome star wars sleeve I have).

New Pad

We’ve been in the new house for a week, and what a week it’s been.

The move was okay but the unpacking took me nearly the full week to get done. Yesterday I changed the curtains and took the last of the boxes and others disposable goods (read – leftover crap) to the tip.

For my troubles I’ve been a bit under the weather. Mostly looking like I’ve been scrapping in the streets of Manchester, with a face swollen with the worst cold sore outbreak I’ve had for years and lumpy glands under my chin.

On the plus side though I have watched a few films while we waited for sky to be installed (Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Lego Movie, Machine Gun Preacher & Raging Bull). I still have three issues of Empire to catch up on though,

So new pad pics….

and here’s our favourite spot – note big pile of issues of Empire and the photo from our Harry Potter Studios Tour.

We;re thinking this house would be excellent with surround sound (when we have some money…..)

Moving home…..

On the 2nd Jan we were hit with the news that our landlady wants us out as she’s moving back in, so as such I’ll be taking a few weeks absence while we pack up our belongings, move next weekend and wait for everything to get hooked up at the new place.

See you on the other side.

2014 Round-Up: The Good, the Bad….

Happy 2015 folks!

Small absence from this blog but I have been working my butt off in my normo working life and haven’t had much chance for blogging, but as Jack Torrence would say “Heeeere’s STACEY” (in a less maniacal “I’m going to chop you into little pieces” way).

And here’s my check-ins from 2014 to show that although I haven’t been blogging, I have been watching. This is inclusive of films me and my better half have been watching but exclusive of films I’ve watched on my own.

X-Men Days of Future Past: In particular the Quicksilver scene, I know – yes I am that easy to please. First off I’m a huge American Horror Story fan and Evan Peters is a greatly talented bloke and secondly the VFX in this shot really show how far we’ve come since the tear inducing days of George Lucas’s “look what we can do now” massacring of A New Hope. If you haven’t seen the featurette of the scene, check this clip out.

Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie: It might not be up there with masterpieces but as far as dick and fart features go it;s pretty great. The best thing for me though, being three rows from the front of the Q & A after the film with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. They said some pretty inspirational stuff and I came away from the Apollo full of wide eyed delight and ideas for the future. My teenage years owe a lot to Kevin Smith, I still remember the first time I saw Clerks and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it since.

Most recently seen goes to Man on the Moon. I have had the Mighty Mouse song stuck in my head ever since and have been scouring the net for any available info or footage I can find of Andy Kaufman.

Magic Mike: One of the WORST films I have ever seen in my life. The plot is….well, not a plot really, I’m still trying to figure it how this even got made.

Hummingbird: The Stath will have to pull something pretty amazing out of the bag to get me to watch another one of his one word titular films. Bobbins.

After Earth: Meh. Haven’t cared less about characters in a film since the Bourne Travesty Legacy.

Oh Captain! My Captain: Goodbye Robin Williams

Carpe diem, seize the day, make your lives extraordinary

I’m trying to find the words to write to do justice to someone who has been in my film loving life for as long as I can remember. I can’t even remember the first time I saw him just that he’s always been there, making me laugh and cry.

The manic highs and lows meant for an erratic life but a brilliant career, would he have been able to act such a great range of emotional depth if it wasn’t for his lifelong struggles with addiction and depression? Would his star have burned so bright? Probably not.

His filmography, nominations and awards speak for themselves, but for me he will always be John Keating, whispering Carpe Diem, a phrase I first heard when I watched Dead Poets Society around age 12, and for the first time that I can remember cried my eyes out at the end of a film.

So I’ll leave you with this.

and for more profound words, direct you over to Empire.

Absence due to FILMSHIZ (aka look at MAH SHIT)

Yup, I haven’t been about for a few weeks but I done the following(expect me back as of now):

I went to Vegas.

Zoltar gave me my fortune. Unfortunately I didn’t get BIG (although being an adult should it work in reverse?). I also didn’t get to jump about playing chopsticks on a giant piano (boo).

20140605_161833 20140605_163745

I did get to dress up all late 60s chick and have my birthday dinner with my friends in The Peppermill where they’ve filmed scenes in countless films including Casino.

IMG_20140609_203742 20140609_220906BHoF

I bought a rouge squad hoodie too, but haven’t had the chance to photo it yet. It’s super amazing though.

I got back from Vegas.

And a workmate bought me this Princess Leia mug (which is not my new FAV mug).

I bought myself these AWESOME stromtrooper star wars Vans.

I went to see one of my fav Directors EVER – Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes do their Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast and watch the Super Groovy Cartoon Movie.

Smith said she really inspiring shit and it’s made me even more than ever want to just try things because someone has to do everything, right. No holding back.

Oh and I bought these ridiculously awesome comfy pants.

Normal service will resume as of next week.

May 4th: Star Wars Day fun for FREE!

Yup, nearly STAR WARS DAY (aka my folks silver wedding anniversary!) and for a little celebration I bring you things you can do for free rather than the usual “here’s where you find cool shit you have to pay for” post.

I am a huge fan of Mollie from Wilde Olive and her super cute artwork with faces. She’s also a big Star Wars fan and she’s put together a few SW based projects that you can do at home for free (because she’s amazing like that).

So here are the two currently released – go to her blog for some free stuff to do this year on Star Wars Day.

A few free motifs for your crafting pleasure:

and this AMAZING Wampa with a removable arm!

Aren’t they fantastic! Wishing you all a fantastic STAR WARS DAY, may the 4th be with you 😉

The Muppets Most Wanted

Have I ever said how much I love the Muppets? I was pretty obsessed with Fozzie when I was a kid. My first ever watch was a Fozzie bear one which had tomatoes on the strap and Fozzie on the front. I thought (and still do to some extent) that he was the best comedian I had ever seen. How can you not love a bear with a pork pie hat and fart shoes?

Looking for muppet merch? Why not try some of this?

As a nail obsessive I love OPIs new set they’ve brought out with the new film. You can get this four mini polish set for a very reasonable price at Nail Polish Direct.

This awesome Kermit the frog cameo ring is available from yshtainberg on Etsy

This Piiiiiiigs In Sppppppaaaaaace! Thermos from kerrilendo on Etsy

The RetroInc on Etsy have this fabulous minimalist Sam the Eagle print (and many others which are also amazing)

And last and in no means least this fantastic Faces of Kermit poster from JoeKayse on Etsy

Captain America: The Winter Solider

Have to say, the first Cap film did not blow me away. I can’t even remember much of it now that I’m thinking about it BUT with the addition of the Black Widow and the juxtaposition of their views on what the greater good is, The Winter Soldier really looks promising and more to the point interesting to those of us who aren’t all AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!

So on that note I went looking for some non official merch and these are the good things I found.

Vintage Style Captain America Cross Stitch? Yes please!  (Uniquelyeunice at Etsy)

Pretty awesome handpainted converse from Rahul Mistry at Etsy

This mini skirt from Sweetcheekstitches at Esty is pretty

Want to add some finishing touches to home made projects with some ribbon? The grosgrain from St Tiger at Etsy would be perfect

My personal favourite this brooch from Visiting Cinderella at Etsy

And just in case you really, really want your cat to have that Steve Rogers touch, then this little collar tab might be for you, from Happy Pet Tag at Etsy

Enjoy the film folks, I’ll be waiting for it’s release on DVD rather than going to the flicks after the disappointment last time round. Let me know what you think!
